Update on the XPT kettle situation
NSW Trains removed the kettles from XPT locomotives late last year following the discovery of fibreglass particles in the bottom of some kettles. This contamination was caused by the kettle spout rubbing against the adjacent fibreglass panel whilst in motion.
Once advised, the RTBU requested that all drivers on XPTs be issued with thermos as an interim solution until a fix could be attained for the kettle issue. Various solutions have been explored that include rotating the base and kettle holder to a different position to avoid the original contact as well as different kettle types.
To date, a backing plate is now being investigated to remove the contact between the kettle spout and the fibreglass panel. Members will be kept informed as this matter progresses.
