Transport Officer Holiday Rostering Update
Bulletin No. 36.20
To: Rail Tram and Bus Union – Sydney Trains Transport Officer Members.
Sydney Trains have proposed changes to the way that you book your holiday leave.
Currently, a roster is established by September 1st for the following year. Once these dates are set, members can only swap, by mutual agreement, with others in their sub-group.
The Sydney Trains proposal means that members can nominate when they want to take leave, within their subgroup. The main difference is, instead of management setting dates you can nominate your preferred leave dates.
A number of concerns were raised by members about this change, particularly around the inability to swap with people outside of your subgroup.
RTBU Delegate Andrew Skundric raised a dispute regarding this restriction. The dispute is now resolved after Sydney Trains Management agreed that they will not unreasonably refuse a request by an employee to take paid annual leave. This is an entitlement under the Fair Work Act and Sydney Trains have confirmed, in writing, that they will respect this.
To be sure that members supported the proposed change, we asked members to complete an online survey which we circulated via email and text.
- 87% of members surveyed said they wanted a change in the way that they book their holiday leave,
- 64.91% of members surveyed said they wanted to accept the change proposed by management.
This result tells us that the majority of members to support the Sydney Trains proposal which enables you to nominate when you wish to take your holiday leave.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your Delegate or the Union office.
