Secretary’s wrap

Jul 11, 2014Loco Express

The NSW Government’s approach to improving the state’s public transport system is an interesting one….

In the past fortnight we’ve heard the announcement that from Boxing Day this year, the Newcastle CBD will be cut off from the main train line. The move is supposedly to make way for a new light rail system, however it seems to be a clear case of putting developer needs ahead of the needs of the public.

And then just days ago, it was revealed that the guardian services – services which have long been heralded by the government as critical to late night safety on the public transport system – have been cut.

So much for putting the needs of commuters first.

We’ve been noting a distinct lack of interest and action from the government when it comes to employees being attacked or threatened at work recently. Now it seems that lack of interest in safety is translating over to the public too.

Given the Government’s public approach to transport, it doesn’t come as a huge surprise that the negotiations for a new enterprise agreement for Rail Entities workers have proven testing.

Member meetings to discuss the where the negotiations for a new enterprise agreement are up to were held across the state over the past weeks. These meetings have given the combined union representatives invaluable information which we’ll use in negotiations going forward.

You can read the latest on the negotiations in the article below.

I trust you’ll enjoy this edition of Loco Express, and stay safe on the tracks.
