Opal Gates Deactivation Action Notified

May 8, 2023
we will bargain together

Dear Members,

Tonight, we notified Sydney Trains and NSW Trains that we would be deactivating Opal machines on gates by utilising the red emergency button at the gate lines across the network. The action will take place during the afternoon peak on weekdays and run indefinitely from 0001hrs on Thursday, 20 October 2022.

This is the first step in what we hope will be a series of actions affecting the operation of Opal across the network in the weeks to come.

With past performance as an indicator, we fully expect the Government to take us to Court in an attempt to urgently prevent us taking this action. We’ll be ready for such action, however, you can never be sure what this process may deliver.

For clarity, the action is as follows:

Action: Deactivating Opal machines attached to gate lines during the afternoon peak from 3pm – 7pm every weekday.

When: Commencing 0001hrs on 20 October 2022 continuing indefinitely.

At this stage, the action does not involve deactivating Opal poles, just Opal machines on gate lines. We will keep members up to date as things progress this week.

In Unity,
RTBU NSW
