Opinion – Building trains in Newcastle a win-win
The NSW government’s 2016 decision to send $4 billion in rail manufacturing contracts overseas was a betrayal of this city and the generations of workers who built a world-class rail industry here. It can never be allowed to happen again.
The NSW government’s decision to desert our region is a political calculation that will cost generations of jobs. If the NSW government doesn’t have the spine to stand up for Hunter jobs, then the federal government ought to step in.
Rail manufacturing in Newcastle has a future, but state and federal governments will have to work together to make it a reality. The decision to buy trains from overseas happened on Malcolm Turnbull’s watch, and we will need federal intervention to make sure it does not happen again.
