Government must immediately rebuild Newcastle rail line
The heavy rail line into the heart of Newcastle’s CBD must be rebuilt, the Rail, Tram and Bus Union said today following the release of parliamentary recommendations about planning processes in Newcastle.
One of the key recommendations of the parliamentary inquiry was that the government immediately reinstate the rail services and infrastructure that has been removed from Newcastle’s heavy rail line.
Rail, Tram and Bus Union NSW Secretary Alex Claassens said that it has always been clear that the decision to truncate the Newcastle heavy rail line was not in the best interests of the community.
“We’ve been saying all along that it was an absurd decision to rip up the heavy rail line into Newcastle,” said Mr Claassens.
“Cities and regional areas around Australia are crying out for rail infrastructure and the decision to remove Newcastle’s perfectly functioning rail line was mind-boggling.
“What’s more, the decision making process was not at all transparent and clearly favoured property developers over local people.
“We are calling on the NSW Government to act on the recommendations of this inquiry and immediately rebuild the infrastructure which has been removed from the Newcastle rail line.
