Get a history lesson at ATP before Baird sells it off

May 12, 2015Loco Express

The Baird Government has set its sights on selling off the Australian Technology Park. If it goes, so too will the years of important loco history.

The ATP site contains the Eveleigh Locomotive Workshop building, including the working Blacksmiths shop which is a manufacturing steam-technology site of national and international significance.

The NSW Government is currently calling for expressions of interest from potential buyers interested in the 13.2 hectare park, using the potential (but not yet confirmed or detailed) transformation project of the Central to Eveleigh corridor as the impetus for the sale.

Unions NSW recently passed a resolution calling on the Baird Government to cancel the proposed sale and to undertake an independent public consultation process to determine the best use of the car-parking area which are available for further development while keeping the ATP in public hands.

Members are encouraged to show their support for the site by attending the heritage open day on 23 May between 10am – 3pm (see all the details below).

Refresh your memories and introduce new generations to the wonderful historical and labour movement history that is encapsulated in the Eveleigh Locomotive Workshops by taking your family along to the event.

Having large numbers attend the open day will also be a timely reminder to ATP management and the Government of the continuing sustained interest in the heritage future of the workshops and the precinct.

Thanks to the RTBU Retired members for their dedication to raising awareness of the need to protect the ATP.
