Expanding stations and re-opening lines vital to improving transport in NSW
Media release, 23 August 2025: Reports that the NSW Government may revive Woollahra train station highlight the urgent need to expand access to public transport across the state, the Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) NSW says.
RTBU NSW Secretary, Toby Warnes, said reopening Woollahra would be a positive first step, but called on the government to commit to a statewide review of all disused stations and rail lines – and to ensure that any housing built near rail stations includes affordable housing, including for essential workers.
“Expanding access to public transport, not matter where in the state, is a good thing,” Mr Warnes said.
“The NSW Government should put a halt to the speculation and start delivering.
“Reviving train stations like Woollahra obviously opens up affordable housing options while also providing improving public transport access.
“In the middle of a cost of living and housing crisis, the NSW Government should be looking at all the possible options and consulting with the community and experts on the best approach.”
Mr Warnes said nothing should be off the table when it comes to improving public transport access – including reopening disused rail lines.
“It shouldn’t matter if you live in the eastern suburbs or the far west – every community deserves decent access to public transport.
“The NSW Government should be looking not just at reviving old rail stations, but also disused rail lines – especially in regional communities.
“Re-opening Woollahra would be a smart first step, but it shouldn’t be the last. Communities right across NSW are crying out for better access to public transport. A statewide review would be an important step towards building a fairer and more accessible transport network.
“If the government is serious about easing cost-of-living and housing pressures, it should start by making public transport more accessible to people, no matter where they live.”
