Brace for ‘traffic armageddon’, warns Tele
Sydney bus drivers have been doing a terrific job adjusting to the new bus routes in the CBD following the closure of George Street to buses.
But the real test is coming for the NSW Government’s planning with George Street set to close to all traffic on Friday evening from 8pm.
The Daily Telegraph is warning Sydney’s commuters to brace for what they call ‘traffic armageddon’ — with 25 per cent of the city’s north-south traffic now set to share Elizabeth, Castlereagh, York and Clarence streets with the re-routed buses.
It’s hard to predict what will happen in peak hour on Monday next week, but the fact is that we will see more cars funnelled through key roads and intersections in the CBD.
We’re certainly hoping it goes smoothly, and we’re also hoping that if there are major hold-ups, commuters understand that it’s the responsibility of the Government to address congestion – not bus drivers.
As always, please report any incidents or crunch points in the CBD to your local delegate or the RTBU office.
