Airport staff can’t afford to go home between shifts
Workers at Sydney airport have been setting up camp and sleeping under the terminal because it’s not worth their while – either time wise or financially – to return home before their next shift starts.
They’re being subjected to split shifts that start early and finish late and are guaranteed only limited hours.
One worker told the ABC:
“We get pushed to our limits. Our pay doesn’t match it. We don’t get rest breaks and we get given a four-hour shift in the morning and then we have a four-or-five-hour break and get a four-hour shift in the afternoon.”
