NSW Trains Travel Centre Staff – Category 3 Medicals
TO: RTBU NSW Trains Travel Centre Members
Bulletin 54 –
Recently NSW Trains Travel Centre Members at Sydney Terminal raised concerns in regards to being required to undergo Category 3 Medicals although they do not undertake any station related activities.
Management clarified their reasoning for having “non- safeworking” staff to be subjected to Cat 3 Medicals by referring to the “Health Assessment Categories for Rail Safety Workers”.
Due to the concerns of Members’ there were a number of discussions between NSW Trains Management and the RTBU. A Meeting was held on September 22nd which resulted in NSW Trains Management writing to the RTBU stating NSW Trains position. (See below)
“Should an employee fail a Cat 3 Medical, we would conduct a risk assessment that would inform a mitigation strategy enabling the employee to continue to work.
We would acquire Dr. Casolin’s approval of all adjustments.
During the time it takes to develop this mitigation strategy and obtain Dr. Casolin’s approval, the employee would not be asked to undertake any other work or be transferred to another position.”
If any member has further concerns in regards to the requirement to undergo a Cat 3 medical or are treated contrary to the above, they should discuss their concerns with their management and advise their Delegate and/or advise the RTBU office.
