Newcastle bus services resume; union continues push for stronger safety measures
Bus services across Newcastle have resumed following an assessment by SafeWork NSW.
Services stopped at 6pm om Friday, after a Health and Safety Representative (HSR) issued a cease unsafe work direction following the violent stabbing of a bus driver in Charlestown.
Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) NSW Tram and Bus Division President, Peter Grech, said while operations are now back underway, driver and passenger safety remains a central issue.
“No driver should face violence simply for doing their job,” Mr Grech said.
“This attack was shocking, and it underscores the risks our members are dealing with every day.”
Mr Grech said the union will press Keolis to deliver stronger, lasting safety measures for Newcastle’s bus drivers and commuters. “We expect meaningful, sustained action to properly protect drivers and passengers.”
