RTBU Media Release: Sydney trains timetable still failing for commuters and workers

Nov 26, 2018Media releases

A year on from the introduction of a new train timetable in November 2017, commuters and transport workers continue to bear the brunt of regular commuting chaos on Sydney’s trains.

Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) NSW Secretary, Alex Claassens, said that “For a year now, Sydneysiders have been thrown into commuting chaos because of a network that has no contingency room and is forcing more commuters to take multiple forms of transport just to get from A to B.

“We need a timetable that moves Sydney commuters across the city without falling to pieces when one thing goes wrong.

“Commuters and workers are fed up with an unreliable, under resourced and overcrowded network and it’s time that the Transport Minister fix the transport network once and for all.

“If something happens on one train line, it throws the entire city into chaos because the train network isn’t resourced or timetabled with the capacity to manage these incidents.

“Government claims that the new train timetable has been beneficial for commuters is absolute spin.

“Transport workers are working harder than ever to keep our transport system running and when there is an incident on the network, it’s the frontline workers who are having to pick up the pieces.

“Transport workers and commuters are right to be angry and frustrated at the NSW Government for its inability to effectively timetable and fix our transport network, and have the necessary contingency plans in place to keep our trains moving.”
