It’s true: NIF trains won’t fit the Blue Mountains line

Oct 7, 2016Loco Express
Recently Labor’s Trish Doyle MP called out the NSW Government for investing “$2.3 billion dollars worth of taxpayers money for trains that won’t fit our tracks”.
Now it’s been confirmed that the NSW government will need to modify station platforms and rail lines in the Blue Mountains because the trains will be too wide to function with the current rail infrastructure.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports that the tender documents show that the trains will be around 3.1 metres wide, meaning they won’t be able to travel beyond Springwood. Transport for NSW confirmed that it was finalising where modifications will need to be made and that the cost of alterations to the Blue Mountains line had not yet been finalised.
Trish Doyle MP accused Transport Minister Andrew Constance of not doing his homework. “Instead of buying ‘off-the-shelf’ designs, they should have brought the project in-house to the experts at Railcorp and designed a new train with our local conditions in mind from the outset,” she told the SMH.
