Harbour tunnel justified as cheaper option for Sydney Metro

The NSW Government has laid out a truncated version of its business case for its decision to build the second stage of the new Sydney Metro line by tunnelling under Sydney Harbour. The line will run from Chatswood to the CBD, and on to Sydenham and Bankstown.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the Government has justified the decision by releasing figures that show a suspended carriageway or a viaduct would have cost at least $400 million more than tunnelling under the harbour.
Labor transport spokeswoman Jodi McKay called for an end to the secrecy and for the Government to release the full business case including figures on revenue, money raised by high-rise development above stations and disruption to residents along the Bankstown line.
